Frequently Asked Questions

Have Question? We are here to help

What's the difference between a toolmaker's microscope and a measuring microscope?

A toolmaker's microscope, like the TM series, is a classic optical instrument often used on the shop floor. They feature a built-in cross-travel stage for manual XY measurement and are great for dimensional and angular checks.

A measuring microscope, such as the MF or MF-U series, is a more advanced instrument with a modular design, often featuring a motorized stage and a digital display for more accurate and repeatable measurements. They can also be integrated with a digital camera and PC for image capture and analysis.

Do Mitutoyo microscopes offer different observation methods?

Yes, advanced models offer various observation methods beyond standard bright-field illumination. This can include dark-field observation to highlight microscopic flaws and contamination, polarized observation for materials like plastics and glass, and differential interference contrast (DIC) to reveal surface asperities that are difficult to see otherwise.

What is the difference between contour and surface illumination?

Contour illumination (also called transmitted or diascopic) projects a silhouette of the part by shining light from below the stage. This is used for measuring external dimensions and profiles. Surface illumination (also called episcopic) projects a view of the part's surface by shining light from above. This is used for viewing the surface details, such as a screw thread or a non-reflective component.

Does Mitutoyo profile projectors offer digital measurement?

Yes. Modern Mitutoyo profile projectors often feature a built-in digital XY counter and angle display. Many can also be connected to a data processor or software (like QM-Data or M2) for more advanced functions, such as automated edge detection and geometric calculations.
