Hardness Testing Machines

Mitutoyo Micro Hardness Testers are built for testing extremely small or thin specimens such as coatings, surface treatments, micro-components, etc. with the accuracy and repeatability needed to ensure even the smallest details meet demanding quality standards. With electromagnetic force loading control, motorized turrets and long-working-distance optical systems like the HM-200/HM-210/HM-220 series, deliver accurate, repeatable Vickers and Knoop (on the V/K models) hardness measurements in tight spaces. Touch-panel controls, motorized stages and optional automatic image‐capture software help reduce operator error, boost throughput and make microhardness testing both fast and dependable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have Question? We are here to help

What makes the Mitutoyo HR-530 series unique?

The HR-530 series is highly versatile due to its electronic control, allowing for Rockwell, Rockwell Superficial, Rockwell testing of plastics, and Light Force Brinell hardness testing. It features a nose-type indenter for measuring both flat and internal cylindrical surfaces. It also includes a color touch-panel display for statistical analysis, graphic displays (X̄-R control charts, histograms), and a curved-surface correction function.

Can the HM-200 series perform Knoop hardness tests?

Yes, in addition to Vickers hardness testing, the HM-200 series (specifically HM-200 Series machines with V/K syntax) can perform Knoop hardness tests. These systems will be equipped with both a Vickers and Knoop indenter unit.

Can Mitutoyo testers perform multiple hardness tests?

Yes, some of the more advanced Mitutoyo testers are "twin-type" or "multi-purpose" machines that can perform multiple test methods, such as Rockwell, Superficial Rockwell, and even Light Force Brinell, often with a simple scale selection on a touch screen.

What is the primary application for a Micro-Vickers hardness tester?

Micro-Vickers testers, like the HM series, are used for testing small or thin parts, or for evaluating the hardness of specific, small features on a larger part, such as a weld seam or a heat-treated layer. They apply very low test forces, ensuring a small and precise indentation.

How do I choose the right hardness tester for my application?

The choice depends on several factors: the material you're testing, the size and shape of the workpiece, the required accuracy, and the test environment. For example, Rockwell testers are fast and suitable for a wide range of materials, while Vickers testers are highly versatile and great for testing both very soft and hard materials. Micro-Vickers testers are specifically for small parts or thin sections.
